Ok, I definitely can't pass trough the 4th level (I think I'm right, it's the 4th level, with the pillar between the red spades).

Honestly, it's not that bas or buggy as you said, and even though you pretend it's a " poorly designed very buggy beta", I believe you sriously have put a lot of love in your game, even tough it is not perfect (and it's still a beta).

I have only noticed two bugs : The first one is with the animations. When you die and you haven't double jumped yet, you can still see the jump anim if you press space, and when you restart the level after death, the skeledog jumps even though you haven't pressed anything (I think it's due to the last time I pressed space during the death anim timer before respawn)

The second one is not really a bug, but a problem in your level design, I think. In the 4th level, I presume you're supposed to jump on the pillar surronded by those red spades to go farther and get the key to the next level, but your skeledog doesn't jump high enough to climb it, so you either end up impaled, waiting in a horribly painful agony for a death that will never come again ; or, your just simply go back and retry, but it doesn't work. For me, it didn't work, but I don't know, maybe you managed to pass, but I couldn't...

Another problem, is about the camera. Your skeledog (Yeah, I know it's a dragon, fine, I got it >:( )... Anyway, your character runs and jumps really fast, even too fast for what the camera has to display. The camera is centered on and is too close to you, and its field of view is really narrow. You can barely see the next platform even if it's close to you, and when you jump, you never know if you're going to reach a platform of fall straight in hell without any warning. Trust me, it's really handiccaping, like in the 3rd level for example, even though this game is pretty easy.

About that, now I'm thinking about it, the keys are truly too easy to get. For example, the second level can be finished in only 2 jumps. And the 3rd level can be finished even if you don't have explored all of its areas (and your troll zone :'( ) You should have at least extend your levels' lifespan to implement a lot more of difficulties, gameplay, maybe puzzles, etc... I know it's just a beta, but come on, I know you can do it. You managed to animate the skeledod's tail dynamically, and it works perfectly fine ; I'm sure you can do it.

Well, I think that's all for the moment. It's too bad you can only write one comment per game. You cannot rate properly a game in development like this, but I suppose it's meant this way to force people to let good reviews instead of wasting their only comment for trash. Anyway, I'm very interested in your game, maybe you could add a short cutscene explaining the story (if any) ? That would be great too.

<3<3<3 omg thank you so much for the feedback I'm really glad to hear someone enjoyed all the little secrets! (and the devious unobvious trick to get past the pillar is to use the jump from the bopped knight to double jump and get over, although the trick probably only found out by me because I played that level a few thousand times) also thank you I didn't know about the jump bug I'll look into fixing it, probably an error in the death function
hehe and I am definitely really encouraged to pick this old project back up :3 and cutscenes incoming!
thank you again for the thoughtful comment and critique, this brightened my day

Honestly... I loved it. It wasn't really difficult, but I thought it was on purpose... I think it would have be great to add a scenario to your game, you know. The universe is very interesting, so why not? I'd love to know what happened on Earth, why does this research lab exists, where do all those parasite-plant monsters come from... But in the end, it was a very decent demo. I love art pixel art, its one of my favorites kinds of 2D art, and I know how compicated that must have been to draw all those sprites.

For the remaining, I've read a lot of reviews below saying the game was laggy, but I didn't lag (on Chrome). The only thing that was frustrating for me was about the weapons, the upgrading system and the fact you lose your gun when you die... I lost the flamethrower I found by pure hazard, so I'm a little bit.... Argh...

In the end, that game has a real potential. I'm totally impatient to see it when you'll finalize it :)

PS: Sorry for my english if I have made any mistakes, I'm trying to do better but I know I'm not perfect ;) Keep up the good work !

Honestly... It's not bad at all for a game made in 48 hours :)

I especially like the hard mode with the colored T-shirts which tell you which way will go the bullet.
I'm only dissapointed for two petty things: The fact that this game is not really darker than that (I'd prefer to be in a glaucous cave rather than being in a green plain under a broad daylight). And the second thing is... It's cool there's a way to continue this game, but I would like to have a real ending. I don't know, maybe... The end of the ritual, with a demon appearing and eating the finalist, or something like that...

Anyway, keep on going like that ;)

PS: Sorry for my English if there are some mistakes, I'm French.

Namlich responds:

Thank you! I see your point with the environment. We thought it was kind of fun if it was on grass in daylight, as it contrast to the actual violence going on and the blood slowly covering the plane. Perhaps it would have been better with a darker environment!

A better ending could definitely help this game! In general, we need to get better at making endings in our games.. We often put all the focus on the gameplay, and then we have no time for the ending, and we end up just making some text: "You won".... And thats really boring.. We will improve this in our future games.

Very glad you took your time to give some valuable feedback. No need to say sorry, im Danish, so im no expert in english either haha.

Maybe it's because I'm not an English native speaker, but... I didn't understand anything :/

Code Lyoko!!! All my childhood!!! (QwQ)

Nice job dude, as always. But does it mean there will be a sequel? Would be soooo cool...

Well, I think I can't say much more than in my other rewiews, so I'm just gonna end it here.

Bye Bye.

Thanks :)

I'm not planning on making a third season of Dead Detention, but if enough people want it, I'll definitely consider it !

Either way, Max will definitely be returning in a something new at some point in the future

It's a very interesting game, for a "demo". The gameplay is simple, but the idea behind it is fun. For me, there are only two problems about this game. The first one, is that when you start to get a lot of crows, they tend to have some difficulties to fly. And the second is about the night.

Dude, the night. I know, maybe it's winter, so it's quite cold during the night, but... These ones are crows. Not ants. CROWS. If they're not even able to survivre more than 2 seconds during the night, they their race should be extinguished for a long time, don't you think? Corpses on the ground can barely make them stay with their leader, but with the increasing number of wolves... Good luck.

Koobazaur responds:

Thanks!

Tbh, that was kind of a last minute addition. I had the main day gampleay and everything working but being a small experimental title, I needed a way to "end" it somehow. So I threw that in as a bit of a stopgap / end goal (how long can you survive)?

There's probably better solutions but that's something to explore in another experiment :)

Sad. Really sad. I can't get a larger grade than 30...

Sad... I almost cried when I've finished this game. I haven't seen something like that before. A that small number...

Sad...
